Real Turcotte game used stick, 1960-64. Stick from one of the early Spartan greats, Real
Turcotte. After MSU, went on to become a well known stick handling coach. Photo matching in
progress. I obtained this stick from a long time Spartan hockey fan and he relates his Spartan hockey experience
below,
"I grew up in Lansing and started playing organized
hockey in 1960 when I was 10. Real Turcotte started at MSU that same year coming from Montreal. He played on a line with Robert
Doyle and Claude Fournell who were also French-Canadians.My friends and I quickly became rink rats, attending afternoon
MSU practices and never missing a game. We patrolled the area under the bleachers searching for pucks, a roll of tape or a
broken stick which we would take home and try to repair. We were hooked... hockey was in our blood. We got to know many of
the players and later on Real worked at Dem Hall and allowed us to skate late nights and early mornings. A few of us Lansing
boys went on to try out at State when we came of age and a few made the team but none ever played much.I played freshman in
1968-69. Our coach was Alex Terpay, a former Spartan himself.Real married one of our buddies sister and soon Alfie was born.
He grew up playing with the Miller boys (Kelly, Kevin and Kip). Alfie played for a stint in Montreal. Real continues to hold
Stick-handling schools throughout the world though I haven't seen him in years. I actually found the stick at a local
garage sale perhaps 20 years ago and have had it ever since. I'm glad its now in the hands of someone who will display
it proudly as a piece of Spartan sports history.
J. Patenge
A special thank you to Mr. Patenge for the opportunity to own and
display this piece of Spartan history and for sharing his story on growing up with Spartan hockey. A true, great
fan.
